新制度主义是一个合理的途径，在当下的研究中颇受欢迎，政治科学由此完成了一个完整的循环，它回到了二战前，有了一些令人感兴趣的新见解。但它或许还不是我们看到的最后一个模式，因为我们永远也不会有一个能够始终如一地解释和预测政治行为的范式。每隔数十年，政治科学就会迎来一个新范式，通常是从别的学科借鉴过来的，这会引发更多的关注和兴趣。它的倡导者会夸大它的解释和预测能力。经过检验和批评，该模式通常逐渐式微并被其他理论思潮所替代。政治科学倾向于紧跟潮流。几个这样的循环往复之后，我们不再期望会有突破性的理论出现。政治是难以捉摸的，难以为我们的心智结构所控制。了解了这一点，我们就能对政治生活的丰富性、复杂性和戏剧性保持开放的头脑。
